Soccer Legends – David Beckham

The player who captained the English national football team and went on to play for Real Madrid before heading to America was born David Robert Joseph Beckham on May 2nd 1975. He was talent scouted by Manchester United and began playing for them whilst he was merely 17 years old.

Beckham played a vital function in Man U’s supremacy of the FA Premier League in the Nineties and Noughties. he was captain of the English National side for six years from 2000 to 2006, although he signed to play for Real Madrid in 2003.

Manchester United is in good shape to advance to the Champions League soccer quarterfinals following a 3-2 win over AC Milan at the San Siro. The competition itself was overshadowed by the fact that it was the first time that David Beckham had played against his old team since leaving Old Trafford in 2003, and Wayne Rooney squashed Milan’s early hopes with two goals to put the game on ice. Clarance Seedorf scored at the 85 minute mark to make the score respectable, but Man U controlled play after the halftime break.

It’s tough to believe that the English premier league is virtually twenty years old. It seems like only yesterday that Sky triggered shockwaves after they proclaimed the deal they had arrived at to transmit each of the games. Of course a huge part of the surprise was the price tag they were paying, which sounded astronomical at that time.

Virtually 2 decades on and the alterations in football in England are already enormous. The first change many individuals will identify is the wages. The top premiership players today make eye watering wages of around 100,000 a week. By any standards that is a stunning reward for their efforts.
