London is one of the largest and most exciting cities in the world. If you live in the UK London weekend breaks are great, but they can be a bit of a tourist trap. There are ways and means of avoiding this so we shall look at a couple of things which are a little bit more exciting.
Although visiting the British Museum has its merits and it is one of the most visited place in London, why not try to avoid the camera clicking crowds and see something really interesting instead. Who wants to see the same old sights anyway?
What about a museum of a different kind, for instance the Hunterian? This is one of London’s best kept secrets. It is the anatomy of a museum, situated in the Royal College of Surgeons of England. It is a free collection which contains everything from Winston Churchill’s dentures to pickled organs. It is the thrill seekers ultimate, and you can see everything which is both curious and gruesome and has to do with the medical field. It recently underwent a 3 million re-vamp, and you will see more than you ever really wanted to.
The Chilsehurst Caves was one of the places where displaced families sought refuge during the London Blitz. It consists of 22 miles of caves, but they are caves with a difference as they are man-made. The tour guide speaks of the world above as being topside and takes you on a 45 minute long tour of the caves explaining the importance of cave to the Kent Mushroom Co, the Romans and Druids.
Then there is the “Secret Cinema”, and if you have found that cinema-going has lost its charm in today’s world of exorbitant cinema tickets and multiplexes, but you like the big screen. This could be your excuse to take even more weekend breaks in London. Join this secret society and once a month you are invited to a screening at an unusual destination. You don’t know what film you will see until you arrive, which makes this all the more fun, and recent titles include Gus Van Sant’s “Paranoid Park” which was shown inside a disused railway tunnel.
