Jekkyl Island, Georgia

by Ella Jean Beauclaire

I would travel to Jekkyl Island with my family during the Easter break sometimes, when it was not hot enough for swimming in the ocean yet. This is one location to travel to during the summer, or at least in May or for turtle watching.

Originally an island get-away for rich vacationers, Jekkyl Island’s former patrons left lingering real estate of their lifestyle, as seen by the Victorian mansions, known as summer homes. To experience a taste of that life, the Jekkyl Club Hotel is an example of this bygone era. The hotel rates in the top 500 resorts in the world, not bad for an island in Georgia. With comparable rates, you might want to consider this hotel.

The island might have well been named Sea Turtle Island, because starting in May, the female sea turtles can be observed making their way from the sea and up to areas on shore to dig nests for laying their eggs. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center stationed on Jekkyl Island is established for this protected species, and provide opportunities for tourists and residents to join in a walk on the beach with a guide, to observe the amazing ritual these turtles carry out each year. Children should be monitored closely as the turtles cannot be disturbed during their season of laying eggs.

For those who must have speed besides internet speed, there is the Golden Isle speedway about 25 minutes away in Waynesville. Check out their website for dates of races and prices.

Driftwood Beach is known for the successful shelling, better some say then beaches in Florida. There is the Villa By the Sea hotel with comparable rates, a pool, playground, and horseback riding available at Victoria’s Carriages nearby. Watching dolphins swimming in the water will only make this experience more enjoyable.

Summer Waves Waterpark can be an excellent diversion for families when wanting to leave the beach for a while. The rates are very good and the Pirates Passage ride is an experience very popular for children and adults. Enjoy the wave pool here, and other activities that can be seen on their website.

For golf and bike enthusiasts, rent at the Mini Bike and Golf Rentals. Bikes can be rented at approximately 11.00 per day, and there are 20 miles of winding trail to enjoy on the island.

To top off the day, enjoy the Low Country Boil Buffet on the harbor, with enormous meals catered by SeaJay’s Waterfront Cafe. Adults are 15.00 and children are 7.50 for ages 10 and under.

There are such hotels everywhere, even near your house or so, you just need to explore it. If John had not gone to this place, how would we know that it has a pool at the 76th floor?

    > the attempt is to make it a world center of business like London or New York, not just blow a bunch of money on extravagant hotels because it’s fun. The hotels attract the big money, and the big money attracts… While this is their plan, I think they are delusional about their ability to execute this plan. London and New York aren’t *just* financial hubs, they are also cultural hubs. They are genuinely desirable places to live – liberal, diverse, with both history and future ambitions. Dubai can import culture, kind of, but it can’t generate culture, and all the culture it imports will be derivative. It’s not where The Next Thing will be created. Once *everyone else* knows that the Next Thing is, then they can bring it to Dubai. Yawn. Intellectual centers are created in places that intellectual people like to be. I don’t see where Dubai has made any serious attempt to bring that kind of person in. I assume all the celebrities who "live" there have been given luxury houses, because there’s no other plausible explanation.
