Gold Coast and The Games In 2018

by Cordelia Kennedy

The Gold Coast region is amazing and one of the most incredible places to visit. They currently have a bid in for the Commonwealth Games which will be held in 2018 and the jury is still out on whether this will be a reasonable undertaking for this region.

The bids are in and it looks like the following are the current prospects to host the games:

In Africa, there are two choices Abuja , Nigeria and Nairobi , Kenya . In North America the candidate is Toronto Canada , and in Oceania the two prospects are Gold Coast , Australia and Auckland , New Zealand .

The State Premier Anna Bligh is on her way to India to argue for the right to bring the Commonwealth Games to the incredible Gold Coast, but many feel that the Gold Coast won’t get the games merely because this region has already put themselves in for the FIFA 2018 games and therefore will potentially be hosting the World Cup this very same year. One region can not feasibly be host to both sporting events in the same year, and with the Gold Coasts tenacity in trying to bring the World Cup in for that year, this region will have to sacrifice their bid for the Commonwealth Games, or so it is thought.

As of yet their bid is still on the table, and with much time until the final decision in 2011, they plan to fight this one to the end defending their rights to bid on both of these incredible sporting events that will draw much needed attention and money into this region.

As of now New Zealand and Nigeria are the front runners for hosting the event, there is a lot that the Gold Coast can offer for these games. Despite all the drama around the bid for two of the largest sporting event s of the year, it also looks as if the Gold Coast has a change at hosting the Commonwealth Games, despite the bid for the FIFA event. Many argue that the Gold Coast region is the perfect location for this outstanding event.
