Planning a vacation can sometimes seem like an arduous task, figuring out where to stay and what to see. At the Holladay House Bed and Breakfast, guests can have it all – a location near to dozens of famous sites and attractions, the warmth and hospitality of ace innkeepers, gourmet breakfasts and the special ambiance one can only find at a historic inn.
This Orange, Va., inn, now celebrating 20 years of welcoming guests, is close to enough unique activities to easily fill a two-week vacation itinerary. The homes of three presidents are within a short drive of the inn, including James Madison’s Montpelier, just three miles away. Thomas Jefferson’s famed Monticello and James Monroe’s home, Ash-Lawn Highland, are only a half-hour away. Civil War sites and battlefields, as well Revolutionary War sites also are nearby.
The area around Holladay House boasts plenty of other activities, as well. Many local vineyards offer tours and tasting, and more than half a million people visit Virginia wineries each year, sampling some of the nation’s top vintages. Orange offers a variety of antique shops, galleries and interesting boutiques. Each year the area is host to several musical events, including an opera festival at Ash-Lawn Highland and several bluegrass festivals. Hiking, biking, hot air ballooning, fishing and horseback riding are just a few of activities available for outdoor enthusiasts, and the innkeepers at Holladay House are always happy to help their guests plan their day.
The inn itself is a true historic gem, built in 1830, and one of the sites named on the Journey Through Hallowed Ground. This journey, created by the National Register of Historic Places, includes 65 historic sites along Virginia’s scenic Route 15. Historic figures such as James Madison, Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis have passed by the historic inn’s doors and Civil War soldiers skirmished along Main Street.
The innkeepers have lovingly restored their Virginia inn, keeping its historic charm and adding a dose of romance. The six guest rooms are furnished with antiques and all have either a queen-size or king-size bed topped with luxurious linens. Several rooms include a fireplace or double whirlpool tub. Amenities include fine, hypoallergenic bath products, cable TVs with a DVD player, CD players, wireless internet and much more. Locally produced coffee and tea are always available, and throughout the day, guests enjoy homemade goodies, such as freshly baked cookies or scones. Each morning, a two-course breakfast is served on fine china using fresh, local ingredients.
If you need a little extra romance, consider adding on one of the innkeepers’ special packages. Guests can book in-room massages or arrange for fresh flowers or a bottle of Virginia wine to be placed in their room. Another option is a hot air balloon ride package that includes a special “breakfast-to-go”, the flight and a glass of champagne. The Cupid and Aphrodite packages include extra amenities such as a bottle of wine, a freshly-baked lava cake or fruit and cheese tray and dinner at a local restaurant.
